Orthotics are designed to take the strain off a joint or an entire region of the body, helping to alleviate pain and ensure therapy is successful. Hand orthoses are specially designed to help stabilise the joint or immobilise your fingers, hand, or wrist. Some hand orthoses can correct the position of your hand, or they can be adjusted to allow a specific range of motion, helping to prevent users from performing movements that may hinder recovery.

The length of time you use the orthosis for can vary widely from patient to patient as it depends on the symptoms, the clinical diagnosis and individual factors. The type of support or orthosis can also play a role. If you are unsure, wear the respective orthosis or support for as long as your doctor or your therapy plan recommends. Your doctor will also explain exactly which hand orthosis or wrist support is suitable for you and how to wear the respective device properly.
Thumb orthoses are designed to protect and stabilise the thumb and thumb joint as well as relieve pain. They are often prescribed after an injury or an operation but can also be used to relieve pain or discomfort before surgery and are also suitable for treating symptoms of arthritis and irritation.
A suitable hand orthosis can provide the stability and protection you need to begin your rehabilitation, helping to promote healing and help you to improve or regain your health as quickly as possible.

Supports are more elastic than orthoses and are made of breathable knitted fabric. Many will include inserts to give added support and stability to the affected area as well as to ligaments and joints. Hand supports, wrist supports, and finger supports are all practical devices that use compression to improve blood circulation and aid the healing process. However, if you need to control or stabilise the joint to a greater extent, or even immobilise it fully, a hand orthosis may be the better option.
