What is foot drop and why an orthosis?

When the muscles that lift the ankle weaken, the toes catch the ground — which means tripping and falls.

Causes

Most often after a stroke, multiple sclerosis, peripheral nerve damage, a disc herniation or polio. The cause directly shapes which orthosis is right.

What the orthosis does

An AFO holds the forefoot up through swing phase and controls the descent at heel strike. Tripping drops, walking speed and endurance improve.

Choosing the right type

Spasticity, muscle strength and your activity goal decide the model. An off-the-shelf product does not suit every patient.

AFO options

From carbon AFOs to a microprocessor leg orthosis, there are several levels depending on need.

  1. 01

    Assessment

Gait analysis plus an assessment of muscle strength and spasticity.

  2. 02

    Trial

Suitable AFO models are tried in the clinic so you feel the difference directly.

  3. 03

    Fitting

A custom device is made if needed, and shoe compatibility is checked together.

  4. 04

    Review

Usage training and a follow-up appointment to confirm it is working.

Frequently asked questions

Carbon AFOs such as WalkOn are slim enough for most ordinary shoes. We advise on shoe choice during the fitting.

Yes, orthoses are fitted for foot drop in children too. Review appointments are simply scheduled more often because of growth.

It is usually considered early in rehabilitation, once gait training begins. Your treating doctor and physiotherapist set the exact timing.

An AFO supports the ankle. The C-Brace manages both knee and ankle function under microprocessor control and is used where the loss of function is more extensive.
