How active vacuum sockets work.

A comfortable socket is critical for an amputee to lead a full and active lifestyle. If the socket doesn't fit comfortably, it can affect the health and wellbeing of the residual limb. Active vacuum solutions for transtibial (and transfemoral) amputees provide the ultimate socket comfort. By means of a pump unit, a vacuum is created between the suspension sleeve and the liner by the air being actively pumped out of the socket during an amputee's natural walking pattern. This vacuum makes for an unprecedented socket fit.

Studies have shown that active vacuum socket solutions prevent volume loss and minimise volume fluctuations in the residual limb throughout the day. The excellent connection between the prosthesis and the residual limb reduces tissue elongation and displacement, and thereby prevents limb/socket movements and improves proprioception. Furthermore, studies carried out at St. Cloud State University in Minnesota (USA) have shown that a prosthetic fitting using this active vacuum solution promotes blood circulation in the residual limb.

Benefits

The benefits of Active Vacuum.

Volume Management

Volume Management

The pressure of blood circulation can cause volume fluctuations in the residual limb. The extent of the fluctuation depends on different factors such as the condition of the connective tissue, your age, vascular diseases and of course, the type and fit of the socket. Active vacuum solutions keep the pressure constant and therefore maintain the volume of the residual limb.

Skin Protection

Skin Protection

Movement within the socket can lead to sores and abrasions, but with active vacuum solutions, the residual limb is secured comfortably and securely within the socket. This ultimate socket fit reduces shear forces, meaning the skin is protected, minimising the risk of skin damage.

Proprioception

Proprioception

For many amputees, ensuring correct foot placement during every step and knowing the relative position of their prosthesis is critical in avoiding stumbles and falls. Active vacuum solutions enhance proprioception by allowing the patient to feel each movement through reduced movement inside the socket.

Harmony P4 Vacuum System

Harmony P4 Vacuum System

The Harmony system provides an active vacuum to ensure a firm connection between the prosthesis and the residual limb. The Harmony P4 pump is especially suitable for active users.

Harmony P3 Vacuum System

Harmony P3 Vacuum System

The vacuum system with the mechanical Harmony P3 pump provides good adhesion in the prosthetic socket that minimises impacts and tensile forces.

Harmony E2: Electronic Vacuum Pump System

Harmony E2: Electronic Vacuum Pump System

The Harmony E2 is an electronic pump for the Harmony system. It provides volume management on the residual limb, enhanced prosthetic suspension and reduced forces in the socket.

Dynamic Vacuum System

Dynamic Vacuum System

The Dynamic Vacuum System offers you a comfortably firm hold, convenient volume management and a good perception of the ground. A permanent vacuum is generated after just a few steps.

Passive vacuum socket system

Passive Vacuum

Passive vacuum, also referred to as a 'one-way valve', provides a high level of socket comfort when a vacuum is created between the suspension sleeve and the liner/skin. When you begin to walk, the air is driven out of the socket to form a solid connection.

Pin lock socket system

Pin Lock

This type of connection is formed between the socket and the residual limb via a pin at the end of the liner which locks into the bottom of the prosthetic socket. No suspension sleeve is required with this system.
