Courtenay's C-Leg 4 Story.
Former police officer enjoys an active retirement after a decade on a basic mechanical knee.
Courtenay Humphreys — a confident retirement.
Courtenay served Gloucestershire Police for 30 years before retiring at 49. A lifelong motorcycle enthusiast and qualified instructor, he was riding home from a Bikesafe event when a mechanical failure caused him to lose control on a tight bend. The crash led to five surgeries and an above-knee amputation of his right leg.
After his discharge, Courtenay was fitted with a mechanical knee. It worked, but had clear limitations: “You had to kick your leg forward with every stride, then plant your heel and transfer the weight. There was very little suspension, and when your knee reached in front of your foot it would think you were sitting down and collapse on you.” He had regular stumbles and falls.
Switching to the C-Leg 4 changed how Courtenay moves through the world. The microprocessor controls every step of stance and swing, providing secure footing on uneven ground and confidence on slopes and stairs. The stumble recovery feature kicks in instantly when his foot catches — the kind of safety that lets him relax into his stride.
Now Courtenay enjoys cycling, spending time with his grandchildren and an active retirement that the mechanical knee could never have supported. Stability and reassurance turned out to be the most important features of all.
Stability for the life you want.
