William walking with his Kenevo MPK

Real Life Stories

William's Kenevo Story.

William's brave battle and big impact.

William Reckless — youngest MPK trialist.

William Reckless, age 9, is an inspiring young fundraiser from Huthwaite, Nottinghamshire. In January 2020, when he was just three years old, William was struck by sepsis. After a cardiac arrest, an induced coma and against a grim prognosis, he survived — but the sepsis caused irreversible damage, leading to amputation of both legs and nine fingers.

Determined to give back to the hospital that saved his life, William set himself a fundraising challenge in March 2024 — four years on from his amputations. He completed a four-mile journey, walking two miles with his prostheses and handcycling two more. His efforts raised over £8,000 for the Nottingham Hospitals Charity. In September 2024 he was named Young Fundraiser of the Year at the GoCardless JustGiving Awards.

In November 2023, at age 7, William was given the opportunity to trial the Kenevo microprocessor knee — the youngest person ever to trial microprocessor knees. The Kenevo is the lightest MPK on the market at just 920g, with a small build height that makes it perfectly suited to a child like William.

Mastering the Kenevo took hard work — but in true William style, he surpassed expectations from day one. His mum Gemma reflects: “The progress he made in the first week was amazing. Watching him stand tall, walking the most naturally we have seen since he lost his legs, has been emotional to say the least.”

MPKs change what's possible for the youngest users.
