Why Choose a Microprocessor Knee?

Why Choose a Microprocessor Knee?

The Ottobock Difference

The Ottobock Difference

Ottobock launched the first fully microprocessor-controlled knee in 1997 and remains the world's leading manufacturer of MPKs. Our systems continually monitor every phase of your gait, adjusting in real time as you speed up or slow down.

Stance, Swing, and Everything in Between

Stance, Swing, and Everything in Between

All prosthetic knees mimic two phases of the gait cycle. During stance phase, your foot is on the ground — the knee acts as a shock absorber. During swing phase, the knee flexes so your foot can clear the floor for the next step.

Mechanical vs. Microprocessor

Mechanical vs. Microprocessor

Mechanical knees use locks, friction, or hydraulics — often less natural. MPKs use sensors, software and a built-in computer to adapt resistance to your unique gait, making walking at varying speeds and descending ramps and stairs safer.

Gait Optimisation

Gait Optimisation

Enjoy a smooth walking pattern regardless of terrain, walking speed, footwear or carried weight. Adaptive yielding control gives the right amount of flexion resistance, while adaptive swing phase control ensures the ideal flexion angle.

Stumble Recovery

Stumble Recovery

Ottobock MPKs sense when you trip or stumble and boost resistance so you can catch yourself before you fall. Significantly lower risk of stumbling, falling and fear of falling — whether walking fast or slow, taking big or small steps.

Safe, Intuitive Standing

Safe, Intuitive Standing

Whether you're standing relaxed or ready for the next step, Intuitive Stance adapts to your needs. Even on inclines or uneven surfaces, you can stand and then move safely without thinking twice — and distribute weight evenly between both legs.

Durability in the Elements

Durability in the Elements

An IP rating refers to a device's ability to withstand dust, water and other substances. IP67-rated weatherproof C-Leg and Genium handle rain showers; IP68-rated Genium X3 can be fully submerged in fresh, salt or chlorinated water.

Activity Levels

Activity Levels.

Your activity level (or "mobility grade") is a number between 1 and 4 indicating your overall physical condition and potential for benefiting from various prosthesis options. Your prosthetist will assess your activity level and use it to set therapy goals and determine which solution maximises your mobility and quality of life.

Activity Level 4

Activity Level 4

Description: Users walk outdoors with little or no restriction, for any amount of time or distance. Due to high functional demands, significant shock, tension and distortion can occur. Therapy Goal: Restore the ability to stand, walk and move both indoors and outdoors without limitations.

Activity Level 1

Activity Level 1

Description: Level 1 users typically use their prosthesis only for transfers or moving slowly on level floors. Walking time and distance are likely very limited. Therapy Goal: Restore the ability to stand and walk indoors for short periods.

Activity Level 2

Activity Level 2

Description: Users can typically walk slowly with their prosthesis and negotiate low obstacles like curbs, single steps and uneven surfaces. Walking time and distance are still limited. Therapy Goal: Restore the ability to stand and walk both indoors and outdoors.

Activity Level 3

Activity Level 3

Description: Users can walk at medium-to-high speeds, vary their speed and overcome most natural obstacles. They can engage in professional, therapeutic and other activities that don't put too much strain on their prosthesis. Therapy Goal: Restore the ability to stand and walk, both indoors and outdoors, with only mild restrictions.

Answers to Common MPK Questions.

It depends on your amputation level, the condition of your residual limb, and your overall physical fitness. Ottobock offers MPK options to suit different activity levels and individual safety needs. Our integrated Stumble Recovery technology detects when you stumble and adapts to help you catch yourself before you fall — so whether unilateral or bilateral, MPKs can support your everyday situations. Work closely with your physiotherapist as you train, and contact your prosthetist to determine the best fit.

The C-Leg is rated IP68 for water ingress into electronics, safe for occasional fresh-water use. The C-Leg should not contact salt water, chlorinated water or other solutions. The Genium X4 has an IP68 rating with corrosion resistance, meaning it can be fully submerged in fresh, salt or chlorinated water without losing functionality.

Genium X4 and C-Leg 4 prostheses offer MyModes — settings saved in your microprocessor knee in addition to the basic mode for your favorite or most frequent activities. Your prosthetist programs the values you want; you switch between settings as often as you like via the Cockpit app on iOS or Android.

Let's choose the right MPK for you, together.

Our expert team will help you identify the most suitable microprocessor knee solution based on your activity level and lifestyle.
